A 10 year old boy from Sarnia is being treated at hospital for what is believed to be minor injuries after being struck by a car this morning at the intersection of Russell and Wellington Streets. A cruiser was in the immediate area at the time and witnessed the collision.

A car driven by a 68 year old Sarnia woman had been southbound on Russell attempting a left turn onto Wellington. The child was in the crosswalk on a two wheeled scooter. There was minor damage to the car.

Emergency vehicles were on scene for a short period of time, however, a marked city police cruiser remained at the scene and continued to block the eastbound lane of Wellington while the officer took measurements for his report. The roof lights were activated at the time and the entire lane was clearly blocked by the cruiser; however, several motor vehicles went around the cruiser, into oncoming traffic rather than making a right or left turn onto Russell.

These actions could have caused another collision. This is a violation under the Highway Traffic Act and is a safety concern to officers on scene. Citizens are reminded they must obey rules of the road when emergency vehicles are present at crash scenes.

A total of 68 Provincial Offence Notices were handed out to cyclists during the Bicycle Safety Week blitz for the week of May 6th – 12th 2012.

The majority of those notices were for moving violations involving sidewalks and crosswalks. There were some violations handed out for equipment infractions. This year, several of the riders were given an “Option Four” wherein, if they attend an educational session, which is pre-scheduled by the cyclist, the Provincial Offence Notice is withdrawn. These sessions are being held twice a day on May 26th and 27th only. This was explained to the cyclist when they were handed their notice.

In one investigation, a 58 year old female cyclist received a broken ankle as a result of riding in the crosswalk and being struck by a motor vehicle which was driven by a 46 year old woman. Both are from Sarnia. Minor damage was caused to the vehicles. This collision occurred at the intersection of Sycamore and Indian Roads.

Police also investigated a crash involving an E bike that was struck by a car. In that case, the driver of the motor vehicle was charged with Careless Driving. The E bike driver was sent to hospital with minor injuries.

Sarnia Police responded to two different suspicious person calls over the weekend and found two males hiding from them.

In the first call on May 12, around 4:25 AM, an alert officer spotted a man in the downtown core. He was wearing all black and quickly disappeared when he saw the marked cruiser. The officer got out on foot and found the man crouched under a fire escape in the area of Christina and Cromwell. He was escorted the cruiser and found to be on probation with a curfew condition. He was breaching that condition and promptly arrested. Found in the area where he was hiding was a screw driver. Joseph Ian Hanlon, age 23, of Sarnia, was held for bail.

On May 13, 2012, around 1:30 AM, an officer was in the area of Germain Park checking on a suspicious person. The officer heard coughing coming from a thicket of nearby bushes. A 27 year old Sarnia man emerged from the large flower garden and began walking along the path. He was observed to throw something into the nearby shrubs. He was ordered to stop. Found in the bushes were bolt cutters. He was arrested.

A chisel was found in his sleeve and a pry bar located his pocket. Also found was a credit card reported stolen to police in July 2009. He faces charges of Possession of Break in Tools, Possession of Stolen Property and Breach of Probation. He was later released on a Promise to Appear for a court appearance in June.

A 50 year old Sarnia man faces five criminal charges after crashing into a construction fence near Devine and Conrad Streets last night around 9:20 PM and then running from the scene. Police received information from witnesses in the area who saw the collision. A 30 year old Sarnia man gave chase waiting for police to arrive.

The suspect was located in the 400 block of Talfourd. As the officer approached, the man began clenching his fist and grinding his teeth. He was informed he was being arrested and at this time he moved towards the officer. He was subdued and taken to the ground. He kicked the officer numerous times. The 30 year old witness assisted the officer until the man was handcuffed.

He was taken to police headquarters and provided breath samples that were more than twice the legal limit. His car was towed from the scene. He had been travelling westbound on Devine and without slowing entered the construction site by crashing thru the fences that were clearing blocking entry to the area.

Once he entered the scene, and seeing the construction equipment, he attempted to reverse out but was unable to do so, striking a steel construction vehicle in the process. He fled on foot with the witnesses in pursuit. He faces a total of five criminal charges including Impaired Operation, Over 80 MG, Resist Arrest, Assault Police Leaving The Scene. He also received two Provincial Offence Notices for Drive on Closed Highway and Disobey Posted Signs. He remains in custody and will go for a bail hearing
