COPPS Unit Kept Busy

Broadcast time: 12:00 PM

Date: April 1, 2021

On March 31, 2021, a member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit conducted a traffic stop of a motor vehicle and determined that the driver was suspended from driving.

The suspect was arrested and upon a search of the motor vehicle the officer located several licence plates that had been reported stolen. It was also determined that those plates were recently used in various gas drive offs in the city.

The accused in this matter, Christopher Michael Hammond, 26 years of age, of Sarnia, faces one count of property obtained by crime under $5000, and has been charged with suspended driving.

Also on March 31, 2021, another member of the Sarnia Police Service COPPS Unit conducted a traffic stop of a motor vehicle in the area of Confederation Street and Trudeau Drive. The lone male driver exited the motor vehicle and was immediately confrontational with the officer.

The driver was reluctant to present his driver licence but ultimately did. As the interaction with the driver continued the officer observed a knife on the suspect that was of concern for officer safety reasons. Because of this the officer asked the suspect to remove the knife from his person. When the officer inspected the knife it was determined to be a prohibited weapon due to the fact that the knife could be opened by centrifugal force and is commonly known as a “flick knife”. This sort of a weapon is a prohibited under the Criminal Code of Canada and thus the individual was advised he was under arrest.

At this point the suspected refused to follow any directions and began to resist arrest. Fortunately, the officer was able to gain control of the accused who was subsequently handcuffed. The officer also located a quantity of cannabis in the vehicle that was not properly stored.

The accused in this matter, Carter Steven Dobbing, 21 years of age, of Corunna, faces one count of unauthorized possession of a weapon, one count of resist a peace officer, and one count of driving a vehicle with cannabis in open baggage under the Cannabis Control Act.
