On March 12, 2019, at approximately 2:30 pm, officers responded to numerous calls regarding a female walking into traffic and almost being struck by vehicles in the 800 block of Exmouth Street.
Upon the arrival of officers a witness directed them to behind a building where the female was located.
The female was observed to be sitting in a garden and in an agitated and distressed state. The 40 year old female was crying, yelling, swearing at herself. As officers approached the lady they observed that she appeared to have cut her wrists as there was fresh blood and she was also noted to be holding a box cutter.
Officers began to engage in conversation with the female in an attempt to calm her down but unfortunately she would not calm down and began to re-direct her anger at the police. Officers were pleading with the female to put the knife down but she would not. The female’s behavior continued to escalate. She finally stood up and began approaching the officers with a knife in hand and refused to respond to any requests that the officers put forth.
As the incident continued to escalate and out of concern for all parties involved an officer deployed his Taser which allowed other officers to secure the female and bring her under control. The female continued to thrash and yell at the officers but any further risk of harm to her and the officers was prevented.
The female was transported to hospital regarding the injuries to her wrists and here mental health with no further incident.
