Over the weekend the Sarnia Police Service took several reports regarding a fraud that had taken advantage of several victims.
An online advertisement was placed on Kijiji for a 1971 Datsun 240Z for $5500 with a shot engine. The victims and the fraudster began exchanging texts where an agreement was made for a deposit of money via e-transfer to hold the vehicle and then pull the advertisement from Kijiji. The victims agreed to meet the fraudster at an address on Mitton Street where the transaction would be concluded.
Unfortunately, no one ever showed up and the money was lost.
These investigations are still ongoing. We would like to remind the public to think twice before handing money over for something you have not actually seen or someone you have not actually met. Offers tend to be too good to be true, which usually draws the victim in. It then becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to get the money back or to determine who the actual suspect was.
If anyone has any information regarding this investigation they are please asked to contact Constable Chris Beauchamp at 519-344-8861, extension 6226, or Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
